Mat Pilates classes

Mat Pilates is great for strengthening and toning with a focus on your core and for increasing your flexibility. It involves precise moves and specific breathing techniques and increases your body and mind connection which translates into improved body awareness and posture. Pilates exercises can be tailored to your individual needs and is a great addition to your aerobic workout.

But who should be doing Mat Pilates? Women who are wanting to improve their strength and fitness before having a baby. Women who want to strengthen their abdominals and pelvic floor after having a baby. Men and women who want to breathe better, move better, stand taller and live with less pain, whatever your age!

Mat pilates helps you identify bodily asymmetries and improve on these while increasing general strength and improving joint and general mobility. Doing so will help with your postural endurance during the day and reduce the risk of injury during tasks of daily living.

The Mat Pilates program introduces you to the key base concepts required for proper Pilates technique. It is perfect for the active management of a range of musculoskeletal problems, such as lower back pain, arthritis and pelvic floor issues, as well as muscular imbalances that contribute to various pain presentations and stiffness. Each Mat Pilates exercise has options for level of difficulty ensuring no one progresses beyond their safe working level while emphasizing proper technique and core control. This is a class you can keep doing for as long as you like for ongoing core and postural work, to balance the demands of your busy life.

The Mat Pilates classes are also a great adjunct for those who are very physically active but experience recurrent injuries or ‘niggles’ through their exercise practice, whether you are a dancer, a runner or a basketballer. It highlights asymmetries in the body and areas of reduced control which need to be addressed.

Before commencing a Mat Pilates class you will require an assessment to check your core control and technique to ensure you get the most out of the class. These sessions are also a great opportunity to learn a couple of simple exercises to do at home to complement the class.

Please refer to our timetable for our Mat Pilates classes.
