Pilates! Everyone is doing it….but what is it?

What IS clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates uses equipment to assist correct technique and coordination.

Clinical Pilates is used in the modern physiotherapy world to benefit acute and chronic neck and back conditions, poor posture, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, post surgery rehabilitation and aid in the prevention of recurrent injuries. It can also be used to improve sporting performance.

Clinical Pilates requires specific equipment that utilizes springs and pulleys to apply both resistance and assistance to body movement. This aides correct posture, movement patterns and allows focus on strength and control.

It is somewhat ‘easier’ then floor based Pilates because the equipment assists in maintaining your form so you can concentrate on appropriate activation of your core muscles. Those with mobility issues (including wheelchair bound) or who find getting on and off the floor are able to participate in Clinical Pilates easily because of the equipment.

What makes Vital Core Clinical Pilates better than the fitness Pilates?

The Pilates craze has well and truly taken off in recent years. On every corner there is another Pilates studio. I’m sure someone you know will have recently started attending Pilates classes or has at least played with the idea of attending a “one week free trial” at the local gym.

Unfortunately not all Pilates programs and classes are created equal.

Here at Vital Core classes are run by physiotherapists who have undergone DMA professional training. As physiotherapists we can accurately diagnose movement and postural dysfunctions with much greater expertise then a fitness leader.

Your Clinical Pilates program is tailored specifically to YOU and YOUR needs and requirements. Your program will be developed to ensure it fits your directional preference (a fancy term based on how your body moves), level of expertise, fitness, abilities and ultimate goals for rehabilitation.

Our classes are also limited to a maximum of 5 people per class. This ensures that our physiotherapists are able to pay special attention to you to ensure you are performing the exercises with correct technique and to avoid injury.

How do I start? What is involved?

In order to ensure we develop a program suited to YOU, we require some of your time and commitment to get you started.

You will need an initial Clinical Pilates assessment followed by 3 one-on-one sessions, before you are able to join our classes.

Your Clinical Pilates initial assessment will be 40 minutes. At this appointment, our Pilates trained physiotherapists will conduct a thorough musculoskeletal examination.

Together with your Vital Core physio, you will begin to develop and tailor your program to suit your needs and goals.

Following your initial assessment, you will have your three one-on-one sessions. These sessions are 30 minutes and are essential to continue to work through, develop, and to allow you Vital Core physiotherapist to guide you through correct technique and body awareness. They are a great opportunity for fine tuning and to ask all the questions you need of your physio.

How often do I need to do Clinical Pilates?

Physiologically we know that to notice results in strength, you must stick with a program for a minimum of 10-12 weeks. However, feedback from our Vital Core Clinical Pilates devotees has been that changes have really been noted after attending weekly sessions for about 16 weeks (4 months). Because of this, we recommend a commitment of 2 sessions per week for a minimum of 16 weeks.
