KidFit is a fun, challenging and progressive 8 week exercise program for kids aged approximately 8-12. KidFit  promotes coordination, core control, balance, strength and flexibility.

Why KidFit?

At Vital Core, we understand children may be young sportspeople, but they are not merely small adults. Children’s bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, as well as their brains are constantly growing, maturing and therefore changing. We understand this can make a child at times seem a bit more clumsy or a bit more susceptible to injury as they are learning how to use their ever-changing body. Understanding and working with these changes is essential to keep our kids feeling and moving at their best. We want our kids to love exercise and sport as these are the years that life-long habits are formed. The more exposure we can give our kids to different forms of exercise the better they will be able to find ‘their’ activity, the one that gives them the most joy.

We know that exercise and sport do not come easy to all kids. It can cause some kids to turn away or avoid sport in preference to more sedentary lifestyles. KidFit is designed to break down typical sporting activities into really simple exercises to build confidence and ability.

Young sportspeople need proper training for sports. They should be encouraged to train FOR the sport rather than expecting the sport itself to get them into shape. Many injuries can be prevented if children engage in exercises designed specifically for their sport and preferably in the lead up to the sporting season. Sports requiring a lot of running, jumping and changing direction, need good glute and calf strength, core control, balance and reaction speeds. These are the skills we focus on during KidFit.

KidFit is also designed to help manage stress and strain around a child’s growth plate. Growth plates are the areas of developing cartilage where bone growth occurs in children. The growth plates are weaker than the nearby ligaments and tendons and are susceptible to irritation with impact activities. Common growth plate injuries in children are Severe’s disease (in the heel) and Osgood Schlatters Disease (at the front of the knee). Both of these conditions can be very painful and can result in a decrease in sport participation. By improving control and strength around the joints of the lower limbs we can off set some of the strain from these typical growth plate injury areas.

How does KidFit work?

KidFit is a circuit based progressive exercise class over 8 weeks that runs concurrently with the school term. This means it can fit in as an adjunct with their current extracurricular activities as well as all the other things are youngsters are up to! Currently there are two sessions a week on Monday and Wednesdays after school.

It is for kids who lack balance, control or body awareness. It’s also for those kids who need a little help to get their bodies ready for sport. However, it is also appropriate for the very athletic child who wants to prevent or rehabilitate injuries. Regardless of why, KidFit is a fun, supportive and comfortable environment for kids to learn to move better.
