Pilates classes

Pilates is great for strengthening and toning with a focus on your core and for increasing your flexibility. It involves precise moves and specific breathing techniques and increases your body and mind connection which translates into improved body awareness and posture. Pilates exercises can be tailored to your individual needs and is a great addition to your aerobic workout.

But who should be doing Pilates? Women who are wanting to improve their strength and fitness before having a baby. Women who want to strengthen their abdominals and pelvic floor after having a baby. Men and women who want to breathe better, move better, stand taller and live with less pain, whatever your age! We even have a specific KidFit class combining Pilates and coordination exercises for kids aged 7-12 who need to improve their postural strength and coordination.

The Beginners Program introduces you to the key base concepts required for proper Pilates technique. It is perfect for the active management of a range of musculoskeletal problems, such as lower back pain, arthritis and pelvic floor issues, as well as muscular imbalances that contribute to various pain presentations and stiffness. It is recommended that every one start with this class, even if you have tried Pilates before as you will then enjoy the more advanced class far more. Some people prefer to repeat the Beginners Program for 2 or 3 terms to really consolidate their progress.

Level 2 Pilates progresses directly from the Beginner program requires completion of the Beginners course or a background of Pilates experience. The pace of the class is more continuous and introduces more Pilates exercises. Suitable for varying levels of ability, the exercises have options for level of difficulty ensuring no one progresses beyond their safe working level while emphasizing proper technique and core control. This is a class you can keep doing for as long as you like for ongoing core and postural work, to balance the demands of your busy life.

If you have had Pilates experience you will require an assessment with Kelly to check your core control and technique before commencing. Pilates practice taught in Level 2 will continue to help you identify bodily asymmetries and improve on these while increasing strength globally and improving joint and general mobility. Doing so will help with your postural endurance during the day and reduce the risk of injury during tasks of daily living.

The course is also a great adjunct for those who are very physically active but experience recurrent injuries or ‘niggles’ through their exercise practice, whether you are a dancer, a runner or a basketballer. It highlights asymmetries in the body and areas of reduced control which need to be addressed.

The Beginner and Level 2 courses include a take home Pilates program correlating directly to the skills learnt in class that day. We want you to get the most out of this program so practicing at home between classes really accelerates your progress and you will notice the difference in your body sooner!

We currently run these classes on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the late morning. We are planning to add evening classes on Monday and Thursday, introduce some equipment classes for a small group (no more than 5 participants), and may add a Saturday morning class if there is interest in these programs.
