Sports physiotherapy in Adelaide – not just for the elite

The sun’s out, spring is here. The weekend warriors are out in maximum numbers, and why shouldn’t they be?!

This is the perfect time to pick up the activity levels, shed the winter insulation and get back into sports.

Perhaps it’s the early part of your summer sporting season – tennis, cricket. Perhaps your kids are into (another) season of basketball (after really not having an off season šŸ˜±).

We all know the story of the “getting back into fitness and sport…..”

Week 1 and 2 we are super motivated and we’re training really regularly 3-4 times a week. By week 3 we’re feeling a bit tired but we still want to push ourselves into shape.

By week 6-8 the niggles are starting…. A bit achey around the knee or back at the end of the session. A bit more difficultly with jumping/running through the session. Out comes the ice…. we start icing after each session and increasing our stretching…. but the niggle becomes worse.

Before too long we are modifying our sessions and taking a day or two off. But still the pain doesn’t go.

The worried thoughts begin…Whats wrong? What have I done? I don’t really want to see the physio because she/he will tell me to stop exercising….won’t they?

Eventually you seek help. All going well of course you have come to see one of the team at Vital Core.

Well, often no… we won’t stop you. We will recommend modifications to your weekly loads, but that will all depend upon the diagnosis and most importantly the patients goals. Whats most important to them.

Vital Core Physiotherapy takes an active approach to managing all sorts of sporting injuries and return to sport programs for both recreational and serious athletes of all ages.

Common conditions we manage;

  • Adolescent pains – often considered as ‘growing pains’ – Osgood Schlatters or Sever’s conditions.

Growing bodies are at particular risk to injury particularly through the knees and legs.

We take an early intervention approach to preventing any niggle or concern becoming an injury by analysing your biomechanics in order to optimise your efficiency whether itā€™s a tennis swing, throw, rowing stroke, kick, or stride. We also use slow motion video analysis to assist us with this process as required.

With this assessment and an understanding of what is important to you, the Vital Core team will structure a comprehensiveĀ treatment plan that will get you 100% better and achieving Ā your goals.

We will include a progressive exercise plan focusing on technique and control at all times and may recommend one our many exercise classes (see our timetable).

We have a close network of other highly experienced health professionals across Adelaide and we regularly co-manage patients.

You don’t have to be ‘elite’ to need sports physiotherapy.

We also run a term based exercise program calledĀ RunFit.Ā RunFit class is held Monday nights through the school term as an 8 week program. Bookings for term 1 2019 are now open.

Runfit is an 8 week progressive program.

Tory is a ‘Bronze’ provider of physiotherapy services for Rowing Australia and has over 30 years of rowing experience to share with school, club or masters rowers. She is available to run programs at your rowing club on injury prevention, optimal warm up routines, and off water strengthening programs in addition to treatment for athletes.

Tory was a junior World Champion rower and Atlanta Olympian.
