The role of inflammation in health

Inflammation has become a bit of a buzz word in recent year – inflammation in our tissues, inhibiting healing, making us sick. This weekend, I have read a book that piqued my interest when I saw it on the ‘new books’ shelf at my local public library. ‘Total Recovery: Solving the mystery of Chronic Pain and Depression’ by Dr Gary Kaplan from the USA was an engaging read that brought together the role of microglia in the brain, the gut micro biome, physical and mental stressors and those chronic health conditions which don’t seem to be well managed in medicine – Chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, even IBS and depression.

It brought together much of the recent research to link much of what we can read online about wellbeing, hormones, stress management and again, that gut flora, as well as highlighting some of our current usual treatment approach of different medical specialities not looking much at the whole person. It emphasises the important role we each have as individuals in looking after our own health, and the importance of eating well, exercising daily, sleeping well, reducing stressors and paying attention to some of the funny symptoms.

I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to understand more about chronic pain whether because you suffer it yourself, you support someone who struggles with it or you need more knowledge professionally.
