Most people know that exercise is “good for them.” For years, the message (often from physiotherapists) has been“just move a little more.” For someone who is completely inactive, that’s a very good place to start, but it's just not enough. For many people in midlife and beyond, that message doesn’t go far enough.
If your goal is not just to move, but to stay strong, independent, and capable as you age, then at some point “a little more” simply isn’t enough.
What we often see in the clinic isn’t a lack of motivation it’s uncertainty. People aren’t sure what they should be doing, how hard to push, or how to exercise without flaring things up. The reality is your body needs the right type of challenge to adapt. Not extremes, but enough stimulus to create meaningful change in body composition.
Simply staying “active” is a good foundation, but if exercise remains too gentle, your body has no reason to improve. Muscles and tendons, your heart, lungs and brain need to be challenged. That means lifting slightly heavier loads, working at a higher intensity and completing exercises that feel effortful rather than easy.
This isn’t about pushing through or even into pain it’s about finding the right level of challenge for you. When that balance is right, people feel stronger not just during exercise, but in everyday life.
Joint pain often leads people to avoid exercise, yet most joints respond extremely well to appropriately prescribed movement.
Gentle movement reduces stiffness, which is where “just moving more” can help initially. Lasting improvement comes when joints are gradually exposed to progressive load. This helps improve joint lubrication, supports cartilage health, and increases tolerance to activity. When exercise is done well, most people experience less joint pain, better movement, and greater confidence in what their body can handle.
Bone density naturally declines with age, particularly for women after menopause. While general activity is important, bones need more than movement alone they respond and build through exposure to regular and varied resistance and impact.
Exercise also plays a powerful role in maintaining cognitive function and emotional wellbeing.
When movement includes coordination, balance, or something new, it challenges the brain as well as the body. This helps support balance, reduce falls risk, and maintain cognitive sharpness.
Just as importantly, many people notice the emotional shift that comes with regular exercise. They feeling clearer, calmer, and more in control. In a busy phase of life, this can become one of the most valuable parts of the week.
The message to “just move more” has helped many people get started in regular exercise and it remains a helpful first step.
To build strength, protect joints, and maintain independence, exercise needs to include:
Some level of resistance or strength work that challenges the individual.
Progressive challenge over time in every part of regular exercise.
Enough intensity to stimulate change
Without this, it’s common to stay active but not actually get stronger and that’s where people can feel stuck.
This is where physiotherapy-led exercise can make a real difference.
At Vital Core Physiotherapy, our classes are designed for people who want to exercise safely, effectively, and with confidence, without the uncertainty that can come with doing it alone or in a traditional gym environment.
These classes are ideal if you:
Aren’t comfortable in a typical gym setting
Have ongoing injuries or niggles
Want guidance on how to exercise at the right intensity
Prefer a supportive, welcoming environment
In our sessions, exercise is structured and purposeful. We focus on:
Teaching correct technique
Adjusting exercises to suit your body
Progressing your program at the right pace
Helping you build both strength and confidence
Most importantly, we move beyond “just doing a bit more” and help you exercise in a way that actually improves your body.
You don’t need to train for hours or push yourself to exhaustion. But you do need to challenge your body enough to maintain and improve your capacity.
When exercise feels purposeful, achievable, and effective, it becomes something people are far more likely to stick with. And it’s that consistency over time that leads to better health, strength, and confidence.
If you’re not sure where to begin or if you feel like what you’re currently doing isn’t quite working, the best place to start is with an individual assessment.
At Vital Core Physiotherapy, we can:
Assess your strength, movement, and any areas of concern
Help you understand the right level of exercise for your body
Guide you into the most appropriate class or program
This takes the guesswork out of exercise and ensures you’re doing the right things, at the right intensity, from the start.
Book an initial assessment and take the first step towards exercising with confidence.
